Subject: Upcoming Tiger Meetings

Dear Tiger Parents,

First, it was great to see so many of you and the boys at the Blue and Gold dinner. I wanted to let you know that the Tiger meetings for the next three months are scheduled for March 17, April 7, and May 5th. The Pack meetings are scheduled for March 31st and April 21st. If there is something you'll need to bring to the March 17th meeting I'll give you a heads up closer to when it takes place.

I also wanted to ask you to let me know if your son has earned any belt loops so Katrina can order them for the next pack meeting. There is plenty of time for you to help your son earn a couple of belt loops. I'm forwarding Katrina's very helpful email about the belt loops to help you better understand how you can encourage these activities with your son.

If you have any questions before we all gather for the March meeting, please don't hesitate to contact me.

Sincerely,

Virginia

Tigers,

Hopefully the information regarding beltloops helped answer some questions but I did get a few more that I thought I’d answer for everyone.

Awards (like beltloops) and rank badges are paid for by the Pack.

We give a max of 2 beltloops per month and they are earned from activities that have been accomplished this school year. If a scout earns swimming this year and again next year, he’ll get the metal beltloop awarded the first year and a mini certificate the next year. Some of Webelos IIs have earned soccer or baseball all 5 years they’ve been in Cub Scouts.

The beltloop is easily completed with 3-4 basic requirements. The pin takes more effort/time to earn.

Parents determine when a scout has met the requirements.

When your son completes a beltloop or pin, just drop me an email or let Virginia know and she’ll pass it along to me. I usually order awards 1-2 weeks before each Pack meeting. If we miss it this month, we’ll have it ready for next month’s meeting.

Working on beltloops or Electives found in the back of the Tiger book are both great activities for you and your scout to work on at home but are also completely optional.

Again the website to find the complete listing of beltloop/pin requirements is:

http://www.usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/a-sindex.asp

Let me know if your scout has earned any that I should purchase for this month.

Thanks,

Katrina

January 2009

Tiger Parents,

Happy New Year! We have a lot of information to pass along this month. First and foremost, Virginia Richardson will be covering the Tiger leadership position! She has been a part of Pack 48 with her older son Jesse for 4 years so she’s a great resource for information. If you haven’t already figured it out, Scouting has a unique language and way of doing things.

Blue & Gold Banquet:
The Annual Blue & Gold Banquet (a dinner to celebrate the anniversary of Scouting) will be held on Saturday, February 28th, 5:30 p.m. at All Saints Church. The spaghetti and meatball dinner will be catered by Anne Miller from the King Ferry Hotel. The cost is $5 per person (children younger than 1st grade are free). Maximum per immediate family is $20. Reservations and payment will be collected at the January 27th Pack Meeting.

Summer Camping:
It’s time to start making your summer camping plans. Reservations for both Resident Camp (Aug 13-15th) and Day Camp (Aug 17-21st) will be taken shortly. Look for a packet with more detailed information on these two camping opportunities as well as information about our Annual Pack Campout (this June we are planning to camp near the Erie Canal with a bike ride along the canal). Pack Camping is a scout/parent/family event. Day Camp is for scouts although we need parent volunteers to cover 1-5 days. Resident Camp is 2 overnights. We must have 1 leader/adult for every 4 scouts. Younger scouts do much better when a parent is with them at night.

Pinewood Derby:
If you did not receive a copy of the official Derby rules, please see Katrina or visit www.lansingpack48.org. Also, any Dads, Moms or siblings that would like to enter the “Dad’s Derby” can pick up a car kit for $3.75 from Katrina or at Pit Day.

Beltloops:
Your son can earn awards (Beltloops or Pins) for activities they enjoy outside of our regular den meetings. There are a wide variety of sport or academic areas.

Art, Astronomy, Chess, Citizenship, Collecting, Communicating, Computers, Language and Culture, Geography, Geology, Heritages, Map and Compass, Mathematics, Music, Science, Weather, and Wildlife Conservation

Archery, BB-Gun, Badminton, Baseball. Basketball, Bicycling, Bowling, Fishing, Flag Football, Golf, Gymnastics, Ice Skating, Marbles, Physical Fitness, Roller Skating, Snow Ski and Board Sports, Soccer, Softball, Swimming, Table Tennis, Tennis, Ultimate, Volleyball

Each area has criteria outlined to earn either the Beltloop or Pin and when you son completes the requirements, simply let your Den Leader know. These awards are given out at the monthly Pack Meetings.

For example, when your son completes his swimming class in school, let us know and he will receive the Swimming beltloop. This will apply to Lansing Rec sports, school P.E. (gymnastics), or other organized events that your son participates in. If they meet the criteria this year and then again next year, they will not receive a second beltloop but they receive recognition with a certificate during the second year.

The theme this month is A-MAZE-ing Games. You could hold a Family Game Night and earn a beltloop while learning about Chess. The requirements for the Chess Beltloop are:
1.	Identify the chess pieces and set up a chess board for play.
2.	Demonstrate the moves of each chess piece to your den leader or adult partner.
3.	Play a game of chess.
The Pack has a notebook with all of the requirements for Beltloops and Pins outlined. You can borrow that notebook during any meeting or visit http://www.usscouts.org/advance/cubscout/a-sindex.asp

If you have any questions at any time, please don’t hesitate to ask!

Katrina
