Bear Paws October 2008 Dear Bear Parents, Tonight’s handouts include this newsletter and a note about how the Bear Year is organized. Please let us know if you have any questions. We have a few bits of information to pass along and dates for you calendar. Dues are DUE. Please turn in a check for $30 asap. Assignment for next meeting: 3b. Find 2 famous Americans and explain what they did/are doing to improve our way of life. 3e. (Each 3rd grader has been assigned a state at school. Please bring with you the state bird, flower, tree and one interesting fact about your state). Our next Den Meeting is Tuesday, November 4th- Election Day. Holding a meeting on this date will allow us to talk the election process as part of Achievement 3 What Makes America Special. (Parents are welcome to leave their boys at the meeting in order to go vote before the polls close that evening.) Special Events: Crop Walk – Sunday, October 19th, 12 p.m. at the Lansing United Methodist Church.  We have been asked to participate in Lansing United Methodist Church’s Annual Crop Walk.  We will meet at the church for a light lunch in their fellowship hall then we will walk 1 mile around the Lansing track for hunger awareness.  Taylor and I are planning to walk and anyone interested in joining us is welcome Saturday, October 25th the Cornell University Entomology “INSECTAPALOOZA 2008” is scheduled for 9-3:00 p.m. at Comstock Hall.  Visit the Insect Zoo, take part in the Roach Races, get your insects identified by experts and much more!  The wolves are planning to attend as part of the Collecting Beltloop but everyone is welcome to attend this free and open to public event. Veteran’s Day Parade – again this year we are planning to march in the Ithaca Veteran’s Day Parade, Sunday, November 9th with line up at 1:30 p.m. and the parade beginning at 2:00 p.m.  We would love to see a large group of Pack 48 march this year!  Contact Brad for more info (bbuchana@ithaca.edu). Boys’ Life Reading Contest for 2008 SAY ‘YES’ TO READING Write a one-page report titled “The Best Book I Read This Year” and enter it in the Boys’ Life 2008 “Say Yes to Reading!” contest. The book can be fiction or nonfiction. But the report has to be in your own words — 500 words tops. Enter in one of these three age categories: 8 years old and younger 9 and 10 years old 11 years old and older First-place winners in each age category will receive a $100 gift certificate good for any product in the Boy Scouts official retail catalog. Second-place winners will receive a $75 gift certificate and third-place winners a $50 certificate. Everyone who enters will get a free patch. In coming years, you’ll have the opportunity to earn different patches. The contest is open to all Boys’ Life readers. Be sure to include your name, address, age and grade in school on the entry.
